The Holiday is a classic, feel-good rom-com starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslett as two lovelorn women living in, respectively, Los Angeles and Ireland. This winning movie gives us what we want this holiday season: Plenty of B roll of beautiful places, a highly likable and watchable cast, and all the pleasant holiday feels. The Holiday is the brainchild of the brilliant Nancy Meyers and the dialogue and plot move along at a brisk, energetic pace. When two women (Diaz and Winslett) decide to swap houses during the holidays, their mutual decision leads to the possibilities of romance for both. Winslett’s character meets a charming unpretentious guy played winningly by Jack Black, while Diaz’s character falls for the dreamy, swoony Jude Law. Though it was panned by critics when it first came out as predictable, this holiday favorite has picked up steam over the years (it was released in 2006) and currently tops many favorite holiday movie lists. Sit back with a glass or Happy Mommy wine, a bucket of salted popcorn with butter and a cozy blanket. This treat of a movie will brighten any holiday evening and is a sure bet for movie night with the girls.
